In Celebration puts gifts to work for Parkinson’s
Clinton and Florence (although she likes to be called “Flo”) de Silva celebrated their 50th Wedding anniversary in October last year. They turned the occasion into something even more special by asking their guests to donate to Parkinson’s Victoria rather than giving them a gift.
When asked how they came up with the idea they laugh and wrestle for credit before finally agreeing that, “We both had the idea. We thought it was worthwhile. We really didn’t know what was involved but once we decided to do it we got right into it…”
Although they were unsure what exactly was involved, they spoke to our fundraising team to make sure they had all the bases covered.
“We just felt the need to do something for the common cause. Even if it was only a little bit. And, actually, it turned out to be quite a bit more than we expected!”
A generous and important gift
In fact, Clinton and Flo raised more than $2,100 to support people living with Parkinson’s, their families and carers.
“It was a great party. We normally have a small, traditional family group, but this was our 50th so we had to celebrate. There were 60, maybe 70 people. The last time we did that was our 40th anniversary – but I didn’t have Parkinson’s then. Almost everyone got into the spirit and donated rather than bringing a gift” explains Clinton.
The heart of their celebration, Clinton says, “was based around the idea of giving back. There’s a lovely Winston Churchill quote, –We make a living from what we receive, but we make a life from what we give. Plus, there was cake!”
Spreading the good word
What did the de Silvas hope for from their In Celebration anniversary? “That the concept spreads the word about Parkinson’s, and that it promotes generosity. Generosity to whatever cause matters to people…”
If you have a special day coming up and someone in your life has been touched by Parkinson’s, please consider turning your celebration into an In Celebration fundraiser at the same time.
The cause that matters to you will matter to the people you love and by asking your friends and family to donate instead of giving presents – be it your birthday, anniversary or wedding – you can enjoy your special day knowing you are making a real difference to the lives of people with Parkinson’s.
