Because Parkinson’s is primarily a ‘movement disorder’, specially designed aids & equipment can make daily activities easier & safer. Examples of aids commonly used by the Parkinson’s community include mobility aids; voice amplifiers; pill timers; and personal alarms.
The range of aids & equipment products has rapidly developed and is fully catalogued by the Independent Living Centre (ILC).

What does the Independent Living Centre provide?
The Independent Living Centre is Australia’s key aids and equipment resource organisation. You can browse their online database or drop into the Victorian branch and trial their extensive display of equipment.

How do I find retailers for an aid?
Find the range of products and suppliers through the ILC database. Or look for ‘aids and equipment’ retailers in your area using www.yellowpages.com.au 
Hint: When talking to a retailer, ask questions! Some aids and equipment retailers will offer health professional assessments, equipment trial and minor home installations. Others offer repair and maintenance services. Don’t be scared to find out.

Walking Aids
The ‘U Step’ - (02 9417 0184) is a walking aid specially designed for people with Parkinson’s. It can improve stability, posture and walking stride.

Where
can I find, or sell, second-hand equipment and computers?
You can buy and sell low-cost aids and equipment through the Equipment Recycling Network Inc’s online trading post (ERNI) - 03 9879 5211. Volunteers based in the Maroondah region also recycle donated computers and health care equipment to people with disabilities throughout Victoria.
How can I get aids engineered to my personal needs?
Technical Aid to the Disabled Victoria (TADVic) - 03 9853 8655 design or modify equipment for people with disabilities where there is no commercially available solution. |
