Counselling & Support Overview
‘For many people, it is the emotional and psychological effects of Parkinson’s that are most difficult to cope with’ (Parkinson’s Disease Society – Living with Parkinson’s Guide, p.25 )
Up to half of all people with Parkinson’s experience anxiety or depression at some stage (Beyondblue – Depression and Parkinson’s Disease ). Understandably, this happens as people are faced with worry about an uncertain future, ongoing practical and emotional adjustments and stressful life events surrounding the progression of symptoms, such as early retirement. This adversity can be compounded by the relationship Parkinson’s has on brain chemicals that regulate mood.
Counselling and support are crucial to coping with the complexities of Parkinson’s. This guide aims to help you live with Parkinson’s by connecting you to information, programs and resources under the topics below. We encourage you to read these sections carefully and call our helpline on 1800 644 189 if you have any queries or concerns.
