Driving & Transport Overview

photoThere may come a time when Parkinson’s symptoms can make driving more difficult. For this reason, the law requires you to advise VicRoads once you are diagnosed and get your doctor to assess whether you are still fit to drive. The good news is that most people with Parkinson’s can continue driving for many years – particularly with the help of driving aids and strategies.

If your Parkinson’s symptoms do reach the point where they interfere with safe driving, even with aids and strategies, you may need to limit your driving or stop altogether. There are a range of transport options and support schemes to assist you when you reach this point. Even with these options, many people find transport a real challenge.

This is especially the case for people who live a long way from important services and transport networks. In this situation, people commonly report problems with grocery shopping, health care, social and recreational activities as well as active participation in community life (RACV, 2006)External site link.

As you can see, a complex illness like Parkinson’s can pose some real challenges to driving and transport. The topics below are designed to help you navigate these challenges by connecting you to important information, support and resources. We encourage you to read these topics carefully and call our helpline on 1800 644 189 if you have any concerns.
