Family and Carers Overview

photoFamilies play an important role in supporting people with Parkinson’s. Yet many are unprepared for the range of challenges this can bring.

Challenges often arise from the complex impact Parkinson’s has on the whole person. For instance, Parkinson’s impact on movement is well recognised, yet people are often less aware of its affect on emotions and behaviour. To help families better cope with this complexity, ready access to a range of information, support and key services needs to be provided.

Carers have a particular need to access these important resources. If you support a person with Parkinson’s with the daily tasks of living you are a carer. The term ‘carer’ is generally used to refer to anyone who provides unpaid care and support to family members and friends who are frail or have an illness or disability. Carers perform a valuable, yet demanding role in assisting people affected by Parkinson’s and often sacrifice much in the process. To help carers maintain their own wellbeing, it is essential that they have access to services and support.

Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, many carers and families miss out on opportunities for support. Research (Fyffe & McCubbery, 2007 External site link) indicates that this is partly because people don’t know what assistance is available or how to make best use of it. We recognise that families and carers need to be better connected to support, so we’ve highlighted some key resources and services under the topics below. We encourage you to read these topics carefully and call our helpline on 1800 644 189 if you have any concerns.
