Finances Overview
An
illness such as Parkinson’s raises a whole range of important financial
issues. Most commonly these surround work, retirement and super;
insurance; income support payments; financial planning and hardship
resolution; treatment and care costs; and legal
matters such as power of attorney and wills.
Work, super, insurance and retirement planning is a particularly complex area. For instance, people with Parkinson’s who are employed may be eligible for illness-related superannuation or insurance benefits once they reduce their workload or stop work altogether. However, terms and conditions vary between funds. So a primary issue for people of working age is to research questions in advance, such as:
- What entitlements and benefits am I eligible for?
- Is it wise to tell my employer about my Parkinson’s?
- How and when should I make decisions about my workload?
Those unable to work may
become eligible for disability, aged and carers pensions, as well
as a range of other Centrelink payments and concessions. The income
support area can be complex; many people miss out on payments they
don’t know about – so do your research carefully.
Another common financial concern surrounds the extra burdens of treatment and care costs. These are often greatest for people whose income and assets disqualify them from concessional benefits and services – such as those who are employed or self-funded retirees.
All of the above issues
combined may leave people with limited resources prone to financial
hardship. While finances vary, the bottom line for most people is
a need to carefully plan their financial future. This Finances Guide
aims to assist by highlighting important information, resources
