Legal Issues, Rights Overview
An
illness such as Parkinson’s raises a whole range of important legal
issues, rights you should know about and corresponding reasons for
advocacy.
Legal issues most commonly
surround work, financial and lifestyle issues, including employment,
superannuation, insurance, powers of attorney, wills and guardianship.
Some of these issues can be complicated, so professional information
and advice is important.
Rights are designed to protect our
safety, wellbeing and participation in society. Unfortunately, rights
are not always upheld by society and its institutions. Because people
are not always aware of their rights, chances to pursue or exercise
them may be missed.
Many organisations are
ready and willing to assist you to pursue your rights. This process
is called advocacy. Advocacy may be required for a broad range of
issues. A common issue for the Parkinson’s community is to make
sure you are getting the full range of disability and aged care
support services. But remember there may be plenty of others.
With an illness like Parkinson’s,
over time you may face a range of legal, rights and advocacy concerns.
This section aims to help you navigate these issues and protect
your best interests by connecting you to key information, resources
and services that can help. Information is presented under the topics
below. We encourage you to read these topics carefully and call
the Parkinson's Victoria helpline on 1800 644 189 if you have any
