Deep Brain Surgery
There are several surgical options for Parkinson’s. Deep Brain Surgery is the most common. Further information is provided below.
For some people, Deep Brain Surgery (DBS) is an option that can help you regain control over certain Parkinson’s symptoms. While it does not provide a cure, DBS can reduce symptoms for some people whose medication has lost its effectiveness over time. However, it is important to note the potential risks of neurosurgery, such as infection, a bleed in the brain or difficulties with speech and balance. This option is only considered for people who don’t have a high risk of these complications and who are in a good state of general health.
Your neurologist will assess whether you might be a candidate for surgery. If you are thinking about surgery or have any questions, we strongly advise you to talk to your neurologist or call Parkinson’s Victoria’s Helpline: (03) 9551 1122; 1800 644 189.
