Welcome to the first Support Group News for 2011

Happy New Year! Welcome to the first edition of the Support Group News for 2011! Can you believe that it is already February – how quickly we get back into the routines of a new year! We hope that you are all keeping well and keeping cool in this rather hot weather (summer had to arrive eventually!).

In 2011, we hope to get the Support Group Newsletters back on track by sending them out to each group every two months. As a number of our team have been out of the office lapping up the sun on leave for various parts of January, you’ll have to excuse that some of the regular sections are not featured in this edition. I do believe that you’ll find lots of interest to pass on to your group members.

There are some big changes to Parkinson’s Victoria in 2011. We are sad to say that we are shortly about to lose two team members from the organisation. Firstly, CEO Glenn Mahoney will be leaving Parkinson’s Victoria after six years of hard work and dedication to the organisation. It is a big loss to Parkinson’s Victoria as he has overseen some tremendous growth of the organisation in his time. Glenn will finish at the end of March due to ill health and we wish him only the very best.

The newly appointed CEO of Parkinson’s Victoria is a lady, Ann Burgess, who joins Parkinson’s Victoria following a CEO position with the Reach Out Foundation. Ann led a very strong field of applicants and brings highly sought after skills to the organisation. To help Ann learn more about Parkinson’s Victoria we hope to bring her to meet some of our support groups in the coming months (and in time, we hope she can meet most groups).

We are also very sad to announce that Health Promotion worker, Michelle Wootton has resigned from her role at Parkinson’s Victoria. Michelle has been with Parkinson’s Victoria for the past year and many of you have met her during her visits to support groups and at the Support Group Leader training day. Michelle is also the face behind the Parkinson’s Victoria Facebook page and producing the Parkinson’s TV videos on YouTube. We wish Michelle all the very best in her new job and in particular, for her upcoming wedding in March.

For the rest of the team it is full steam ahead as we plan for a busy but exciting 2011!

Health Team Update

In addition to the regular seminars and events which the Health Team organise throughout the year, the team have two major project themes to get stuck into in 2011. Firstly, Parkinson's Victoria has decided to revamp and relaunch the 'Get It On Time' campaign from three years ago. This international advocacy project focuses on raising awareness amongst health professionals and the general Parkinson's community about the importance of medications on time, every time. Medication management for people going into hospital, respite or residential care is still a major problem and needs an ongoing committment to improve community awareness and compliance.

The second theme for 2011 and beyond is to focus on 'Living Well with Parkinson's'. It is hoped that there will be a greater emphasis on seminars and workshops throughout the year that allow people living with Parkinson's the opportunity to come and try different activities that aim to help improve quality of life and general well-being. Some of the topics we are working on are: Yoga, Mindfulness Meditation, Homeopathic treatments, Financial Planning, Carer workshops, Tai Chi, Employment and Travel, Art and Creativity and more.

As for other initiatives, Victor is coordinating an Allied Health Professionals seminar in Bendigo to give regional health professionals a better opportunity to be able to learn about Parkinson’s. We look forward to seeing this seminar take shape and hope to be able to run such events in other regional areas too. Victor will also be attending the Movement Disorders Conference in Toronto towards the middle of the year so we look forward to hearing about the latest research and developments when he returns.

Shelley is working hard on a second Physiotherapy and Parkinson’s seminar following the great success of last years event. Shelley has also established a weekly Parkinson’s Tai Chi class in Melbourne with a master Tai Chi trainer. This is just a small part of a bigger initiative however. Shelley is organising a Tai Chi for Parkison's training course for health professionals. It is hoped that trained instructions from this course will then establish Tai Chi for Parkinson’s classes in different parts of Victoria.

Following Michelle's departure, Catherine will now be the contact person for support groups for the time being. If you have a question, need a resource, or would like to talk through a concern or issue, then please contact her to discuss. Following the inaugural Young Onset Conference, Catherine is also looking at continuing support to people living with young onset Parkinson’s. Catherine will be looking at ways in which the organisation can better utilise technology to improve education and awareness to a greater number of people, especially outside metropolitan Melbourne.

Of course there is lots more happening in and around the Parkinson's Victoria office but this is just a snapshot of some of the projects planned for 2011. It is already lining up to be a big year, but one that hopefully continues to provide valuable support and information to the Parkinson's community.

Fundraising and Events Update

Support Group famous faces

Judith, Fundraising and Marketing Coordinator at Parkinson’s Victoria would like to say a big thank-you and well done to all support groups who featured in the media leading up to Parkinson’s Awareness Week and the Unity Walk in 2010. By far it was the most widespread coverage for the organisation to date. The estimated value of the media coverage exceeded $300,000. What an incredible achievement!

In order to achieve this, Parkinson’s Victoria used the services of a publicity agency to work with support groups to secure various radio, local paper and television stories. The feedback that we have had from support groups was that it really helped to have a professional assist with organising media. In response to this, Parkinson’s Victoria will again be working with the same publicists this year so that we can better use the media to raise awareness about Parkinson’s in the wider community.

If your group has an interesting personal story to share, or is running an event, or is undertaking another exciting initiative that you would like to gain some media coverage for, please contact Judith at Parkinson’s Victoria, judith@parkinsons-vic.org.au or call 9551 1122 to discuss further.

Fundraising for Parkinson’s Victoria

If your group would like to fundraise for Parkinson’s Victoria throughout the year, please let Judith from the office know so that she can assist you with advice and resources to help make sure all fundraising regulations are complied with, and to help ensure it is a stress-free and successful event. Judith offers a wealth of knowlegde and is certainly worth brainstorming with!

UNITY WALK 2011 Sponsorship Opportunities

The Unity Walk has the major fundraising event for Parkinson’s Victoria. Now in it's third year, the one-day event requires year long preparation to make it all happen.

One of the biggest requirements for the Unity Walk to be a success is sponsorship by large and small companies. Sponsorship allows many of the operational costs to be covered so that money made through participant fundraising goes directly to Parkinson’s Victoria for support services and research.

In 2011, Parkinson’s Victoria will not only be providing large sponsorship packages targeted to big companies but also smaller sponsorship opportunities of $1000 to help encourage smaller organisations to take part in the Unity Walk sponsorship as well. Please ask your group members if they know of any organisations who may be interested in sponsoring the Unity Walk in 2011 – either as a primary sponsor or a smaller sponsor.

Judith can provide more information about the benefits to the organisation/company in becoming a Unity Walk official sponsor in 2011. Contact Judith at judith@parkinsons-vic.org.au or call 9551 1122

Sinamet CR shortage update

From early 2010 there has been a worldwide shortage of the medication Sinamet CR (controlled release). This shortage has been significantly disruptive for many people living with Parkinson’s who found this medication effective in their symptom control.

Parkinson’s Victoria is aware that MSD (Merck Sharp & Dohme), the pharmaceutical company producing Sinamet CR, has a small stockpile of the medication. If you have been continuing to take Sinamet CR throughout the shortage with special assistance from your neurologist, you are now able to contact your pharmacist directly. Your pharmacist can order the Sinamet CR directly from MSD for you.

It is anticipated that regular supplies of Sinamet CR will be available from mid-year.

RAPP Project

RAPP Advertising agency is generously donating their expertise, time and resources to help Parkinson’s Victoria with an awareness campaign targeting corporate businesses. Their aim is to raise awareness of Parkinson’s to these large companies in an appeal for support and funds.

RAPP ran a campaign for Parkinson’s Awareness Week in 2009 which was so successful it won the organisation a prestigious Gold award at the international DMA Echo awards in the US.

All support groups will shortly receive a package in the mail informing you of the current RAPP project. They are calling for ‘film stars’ to highlight the daily difficulties that having Parkinson's brings.

It is hoped this project will be successful in raising awareness and financial support for Parkinson’s in the corporate sector. A sector that is still relatively untapped by Parkinson's Victoria.

Impulse Control Disorders and Parkinson’s

If there is anyone in your group who has been affected by an impulse control disorder (such as gambling, hypersexuality, shopping, hobbyism, etc.) as a result of a dopamine agonist medication side-effect?

Any dopamine agonist has the potential to cause Impulse Control Disorder side-effects in a very small percentage of people who take them.

There will be an upcoming support and information session run through Parkinson’s Victoria, the Salvation Army and Gamblers Help for people affected by an impulse control disorder. If there is someone in your group who would like to meet others who have also been affected, they are invited to an upcoming information session.

Please contact Catherine at catherine@parkinsons-vic.org.au or 9551 1122 for more information.

PSP Australia welcomes people living with MSA and CBS

In a move to better provide support to people living with MSA (Multiple System Atropy) and CBS (Corticobasal Syndrome), PSP Australia (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) is inviting people living with MSA and CBS to join them to form a combined group.

All three conditions share a number of common symptoms despite being quite unique. Many of the support options for people living with PSP are also used by people living with CBS and MSA.

If there is someone in your group who is living with PSP, CBS or MSA, they are certainly most welcome to continue attending a Parkinson’s Support Group, however, they are also encouraged to add their name to the PSP Australia mailing list for more specific information and support regarding their condition. Most importantly, joining PSP Australia helps to give these conditions PSP, MSA and CBS a stronger voice.

Please contact Catherine at Catherine@parkinsons-vic.org.au or call 9551 1122 for more information.

Need a neurologist?

Please find the updated Neurologist list below for you to print. There have been a few changes to contact details, and in particular, there are a couple of new names added to the list under the Movement Disorder Specialist section:

Dr Kelly Bertram, Alfred Hospital (public rooms) and Neurology Network Melbourne (private)

Dr Tissa Wijeratne, Western Hospital (public rooms) and Essendon Private Hospital (private)

  Dr Sanjay Raghav, Dandenong Neurology

It is worthwhile for all groups to have an up-to-date list to be able to refer group members to. A copy can also be found on the Parkinson’s Victoria website.
